TREATMENT BREAKDOWN

HOW CLEAR ALIGNERS WORK

Clear aligners are a series of custom-made, removable plastic trays that gradually move your teeth into better alignment. You wear each set of trays for about two weeks, then switch to the next set. Over time, your teeth shift into the position Dr. Cervantes has mapped out for you.

The Clear Aligner Process

Step 1 — Consultation and scan. Dr. Cervantes examines your teeth, takes digital impressions, and determines if clear aligners are a good fit for your case. Not every bite issue can be treated with aligners, and she will be upfront about that.

Step 2 — Custom treatment plan. Using your scan, a series of aligner trays are designed to move your teeth step by step. You will see a preview of the expected results before treatment begins.

Step 3 — Wear your trays. You wear your aligners 20 to 22 hours a day, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. Every two weeks you switch to the next set. Check-in visits are quick—usually every 6 to 8 weeks.

Step 4 — Retainers. Once your teeth are in their final position, you will wear a retainer to keep them there. This is the step most people skip—and the reason teeth shift back. Dr. Cervantes will make sure you have a plan to hold your results.

What Clear Aligners Can Fix

Clear aligners work well for mild to moderate crowding, spacing, and some bite issues. They are especially popular with adults who want to improve their smile without the appearance of traditional braces. However, severe bite problems or complex tooth movements may still need conventional orthodontics. Dr. Cervantes will tell you honestly whether aligners will work for your situation.

Aligners vs. Traditional Braces

The biggest difference is visibility—aligners are nearly invisible and removable. Braces are fixed to your teeth for the entire treatment. Aligners also tend to be more comfortable since there are no brackets or wires to irritate your cheeks. Treatment time is often comparable, though braces can handle more complex cases. Cost is usually similar as well.

Clear Aligner FAQs

How long does clear aligner treatment take?

Most cases take 6 to 12 months, though some simpler cases can be done in as few as 3 to 4 months. Dr. Cervantes will give you a timeline during your consultation based on what your teeth need.

Do clear aligners hurt?

You may feel some pressure or tightness when you switch to a new set of trays. This is normal and means the aligners are working. The discomfort is usually mild and goes away within a day or two.

Can I eat and drink with my aligners in?

You should remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water. This prevents staining and damage to the trays. Just pop them back in after you brush your teeth.

The cost varies depending on how complex your case is. Many insurance plans cover part of the cost, and we offer financing through Cherry. We will give you a full cost breakdown before you start treatment.

Yes. Once the bridge is cemented in and you’ve adjusted to it—usually within a week or two—you can eat normally. We’ll give you a short list of things to avoid in the first few days while you get used to it.

They can if you do not wear your retainer. After your aligners are done, Dr. Cervantes will fit you with a retainer and give you a schedule for wearing it. Following the retainer plan is the key to keeping your results.

A bridge is held in place by the teeth next to the gap. An implant is a titanium post placed in the jawbone with a crown on top. Bridges are faster and less invasive. Implants last longer but require surgery and more healing time. Dr. Cervantes can help you decide which one is right for you.
